Yoga is clowning!

So, yoga technique includes learning to enjoy whatever you’re doing, rather than trying to do things you enjoy. At the heart of this is dropping ‘goals’ or the sense that you need to achieve something, and instead adopting a spirit of playful enquiry in whatever situation you find yourself. This spirit is not without determination, but it’s determination to be present, to stay and to explore, not the kind of determination that involves gritting your teeth and tensing your muscles. Thus, it is the spirit of the clown. I wasn’t expecting to draw this parallel when I finished the clowning evening class and started the yoga class, but there it is. Someone once said to me that people are “attracted to what they need to know”. Not sure about the practicalities of that, but I’ll keep trying to bring the playful spirit to the fore.
